FORMATION OF A LAKE

10 000 years ago, glaciers melted and retreated to the peaks. They have left in the valleys a multitude of small basins where the water has accumulated: 96% of the mountain lakes were thus created.

LAKE ANNECY

The lake is mainly fed by l'Eau Morte, the Ire and the Laudon. The Thiou serves as a natural spillway to the Fier. The waters of the lake will therefore swell those of the Fier, then the Rhone thus joining the Mediterranean Sea. In the 1960s, a vast campaign of purification following reports of alarmist pollution, was born. Dr. Servettaz decided to react and in 1962 the city of Annecy and neighboring villages saved this lake from an ecological disaster.

Since 1980, no more sewers are flowing into the lake.

The first known festival with decorated boats took place in 1551 ... Many feasts have highlighted the lake, but the sumptuous night festival of August 1860 for the coming of Napoleon III has marked the spirits and the Anneciens wanted to perpetuate it ... And now every year, on the first Saturday evening of August, Annecy celebrates its lake with an aquatic and pyrotechnic show (about 250 000 spectators) as grandiose as famous.

FAUNA

The Annecy lake is home to trouts, ombles and féras or lavarets, perch, pike, carp, tench, roach, goujons, ablettes, breams. Trout live in surface waters. The Arctic char is the most sought-after species, it lives in deep water.
