THE LIFE OF MEN IN THE MOUNTAIN PASTURES

Women and young children live all summer at the cottage without descending. The main tasks are related to the production and working of milk. This work is quite important and must be done every day regardless of the weather. We must also keep the animals (cows, goats, sometimes sheep), return them to the cottage and milk them twice a day, skim the milk, make butter and cheese every day. One of the daily chores is getting the manure out in any weather. Traditionally, this is done with a kind of stretcher (body on which is fixed on each side by bars to bring it to two), the wheelbarrow appeared only recently.

The men go up about once a week to bring supplies, And more often at the time of making hay at high altitude, because it is necessary to lower from it  the largest part in the village. The grass is cut from 5 or 6am in the morning by the men with the scythe. This work which exhausts a beginner in 1/2 hour can be maintained by a professional of the whole days.

The barrel is carried on the back (thanks to the bar held at the shoulders) to the path where the mule will take over. A mule carries 2 or 3 barrels. In the 1920s, aerial cables were laid down in order to quickly lower these barrels in the valley on a pulley. These cables arrived either directly in the barn or in a meadow nearby. This idea shows the entrepreneurial nature of these farmers. Tying a 1 km or 2 km cable in the mountains is not an easy task, and this cable was an important investment for a home that did not have a lot of liquidity. Today, almost no cables are used yet, even though they were still there 10 or 20 years ago. The cables are often laid on the ground, because the owner would be responsible for an accident that it would cause. It would be difficult today to have permission to put such cables, because they are dangerous for helicopters. The IGN maps usually report them.
