GEOGRAPHY/DESCRIPTION

Authentic and traditional village in the heart of the largest nature reserve of Haute-Savoie, it is a true paradise, close to Switzerland and Italy, Sixt is the ideal starting point for many excursions. Nestled in a glacier valley closed by two important mountain cirques, the town offers an impressive landscape diversity. Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval is connected by a single road to the rest of the valley by the passage of the Tines Gorge, a glacial lock that clearly separates the town from the rest of the region.

The majority of the municipality, occupied by the nature reserve of Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, is therefore partially uninhabited, except by pastoral farms in summer. Sixt is the second largest town in Haute-Savoie after Chamonix.

The torrent coming out of the main village, at the level of the Tines gorge, is the result of the confluence of two torrents called for one Giffre Haut (but rather commonly called Giffre) and the other Giffre des Fonts.

The stream crossing the main village is called Giffre. It is the one that comes from the glacial valley of Fer-à-Cheval, further than the circus of Fer-à-Cheval, at a place called Bout du Monde.

The other torrent known as "Giffre des Fonts" has its source at the Cirque des Fonts.

Each of the two torrents is the result of the grouping of several small streams and waterfalls in the circus of Fer-à-Cheval for one and in the Cirque des Fonts for the other.

Many waterfalls spring up everywhere. The most important is the Rouget waterfall. In summer, more than thirty waterfalls water the circus of Fer-à-Cheval, including "Pissette, Perrette, Joutton, Fenestrailes, Folii, the Constraint, the Renauds".

The town is bordered by the Swiss border.

SUGGESTIONS

Discover the mountain cirque by doing the many excursions offered on site. In particular by traversing the interpretation trail developed by the Association of Friends of the Nature Reserve.

SKI AREA

It is difficult here to use the term "ski resort" as it is reducing.

Maximum altitude1 600 m - Minimum altitude 800 m
12 slopes (34 km + 59 km Cross-country skiing)

3 green slopes, 3 blue slopes, 4 red slopes, 2 black slopes

In winter, the multi-activity is also in the spotlight: the ski lifts of Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval (2 chairlifts and 4 ski lifts) allow skiers of all levels to indulge in their favorite sport, in a Village atmosphere of Mountain. For the most demanding, the 265 km of track of the Grand Massif are on our doorstep, without forgetting the fabulous track of the waterfalls whose 14 km take place in magical landscapes, allowing to reach the village of Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval (765m) since the summit of Flaine (2500m).
